What is the role of the National Liquor Authority?
The National Liquor Authority (NLA) is a national entity within the Consumer and Corporate Regulation Division (CCRD) of the Department of Trade and Industry. The NLA is responsible for the administration of the Liquor Act, No. 59 of 2003. NLA regulates the macro-manufacturing and distribution tiers of the liquor industry.
What is a Manufacturing Registration?
A manufacturing registration is a registration granted to any liquor manufacturer who produces volumes of liquor that exceeds the following thresholds:

100 million litres of clear beer per year

50 million litres of sorghum beer per year

4 million litres of wine per year
-
2 million litres of spirits and any other liquor per year
What is a Distribution Registration?
A distribution registration is a registration granted to liquor traders who distribute liquor only to other liquor license holders and not to the public directly.
New Online Applications
The National Liquor Authority has developed an online system to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the application processes. The main objective of the online system is to improve accessibility to the web based CMS applications.
Who can Apply?
Anyone can apply except disqualified persons.
Disqualifications
These are the categories of persons who are disqualified and whose application will not be considered:

Minors (under 18 years);

Unrehabilated insolvents;

Persons committed in terms of the Mental Health Act, 1973

Persons who have contravened Liquor Act, 59 of 2003 or Provincial Liquor Laws.
Application Requirements
Any qualified person or a representative of the qualified person can apply subject to the following:
Required Documents
Applications should be accompanied by supporting documents (listed in the Liquor Act & Regulations and instructions in the application form). All documents should be certified, scanned and clearly visible.
Proof of Payment
The applicant should provide and attach proof of payment of the application fee when lodging the application and the initial registration fee prior to the issuance of the Registration Certificate.
